The opening chapter of Kevin Brockmeier's extraordinary new novel, "The Brief History of the Dead," is as breathtaking as any fiction I have read in the past few years. People who have died describe their crossing over into a nameless city in the afterlife. To one blind man, the crossing felt like he walked for days through a desert.

Another man described his passage as an amusement park train ride. A girl passed through an ocean the color of dried cherries and a rain of ball bearings.

You want a fun, family summer vacation, but you don't want to spend a bundle.
That seems pretty reasonable, but you have to give up on the notion on going somewhere far away, like Disneyland, New York or some other really cool destination city.

Remember the romance of Prague in the early nineties -- the faded façades, the atmospheric bars, the thrill of discovering a secret city? During the summer, when you're elbow-to-elbow with beer-swilling tourists in the Old Town, those halcyon days seem far away. But fairy-tale Prague is there, especially if you visit in winter, when the crowds have dispersed.

Stroll down the quiet cobblestoned streets and explore the castle and churches. Spend an afternoon reading Kafka or Kundera in a café, and an evening sampling Czech cuisine (dumplings, cabbage and Budvar beer), preferably served at a candlelit table on a frosty night.

Can Dolphins blush or get embarrassed? Can they change colors depending on mood, environment and changing amounts of salinity in the water?

With one of the most nutrient-rich eco systems in the world, can it be any wonder that the bottle nose dolphin we all know as “Flipper” calls Marco and the Ten Thousand islands home? The dolphins that live in our local waterways and the adjoining Gulf are the Atlantic’s bottle nose dolphins, and in our land of sub-tropical paradise, the local “Flippers” have more fish than they can eat, plenty of time for play, and are safely protected by state and federal governments as animals of special concern.

Believe it or not, the humble baguette was headed for extinction not long ago. In the 1960s, boulangeries scrapped old-style methods in favor of industrialized baking, and the bread lost its flavor.
Budapest
But the French came to their senses by 1998. It's now against the law for a boulangerie to make bread by machine (it must be mixed and baked on-site) and good loaves are once again on the rise. In Paris, there's even a Grand Prix de la Baguette to name the best of the year.

Some of you may remember it in its previous incarnation as the NOISE Student Guide, created as a way to help welcome new students arriving on local campuses to the Lansing area.

But the more we thought about it, the more we realized that this roundup of more than 230 restaurants, bars, hangouts and stores throughout Lansing's many neighborhoods, Old Town, East Lansing, DeWitt, Grand Ledge, Haslett, Holt and Okemos was really something anyone could use, not just students.
